Members of the military that served overseas between December 31, 2008 and May 1, 2010 have an additional year to take advantage of the First Time Home Buyer tax credit.

Any taxpayer who was a member of the Armed Forces can earn the home buyer tax credit if they enter into a contract to purchase a home before April 30th, 2011.  They must close by June 30th, 2011.

The tax credit applies to any individual who served on qualified official extended duty service outside of the United States for at least 90 days during the period beginning after December 31, 2008 and ending before May 1, 2010.

First time home buyers that meet specific qualifications can earn up to $8,000 in tax credits.  Previous home owners would be eligible to tax credits up to $6,500 if they are replacing a principal  residence they have owned for any 5 consecutive year period during the past eight years.
